I have just started what I believe will be my defining contribution to the field of maths education. Over the upcoming months (and possibly years), I will write a series of resources called Problem-Solving Sequences. Initially, this will be for children in Y3-Y6 classes.
The aim is to give all children opportunities to grow as mathematical problem-solvers. I will write sequences of challenges that will address ‘barriers to entry’ to problem-solving, whilst giving all children legitimate experiences of tacking non-routine mathematical tasks.
My aim is to make the tasks varied and fit within the small steps of the curriculum. I want to provide children with opportunities to engage with the intellectual and emotional experience of being a mathematician.
I need your help! I also want this resource to be very practical. It must be something that every teacher in your school is confident to work with. I want to know that it can dovetail within your scheme of work. Before I design the task sequences, I need your guidance.
I will hold four Zoom sessions in July, where I will spend approximately 10 minutes outlining my plans. Then, I will ask you questions and listen to your thoughts. You can sign up for the sessions by clicking on the links below.
I’m love for people to join with their cameras on and ready to talk. Equally, you are very welcome to join anonymously and share your thoughts on a short questionnaire. Everyone who joins in will be given a 20% discount code for the resources when they are released.
I’d love for you to join me in this shared mission: to give all children rich experiences of mathematical problem-solving – Gareth
